A nature-first lodge on an extensive private reserve beside Arenal Volcano National Park, with trails, birding, and close volcano views. It does not have the full geothermal-resort experience, so choose it for hiking and wildlife rather than hot-spring pools.
Why We Chose It
Arenal Observatory Lodge grew from a research-oriented property into one of the region’s strongest nature bases. Its private reserve has a broad trail network through forest and former lava landscapes, with excellent birding and direct volcano views when clouds lift. It is near the national park rather than a walkable La Fortuna base, and the approach is easier with private transport. Confirm current road conditions and transfer options with the lodge.
