The Congress Avenue Bridge bat colony is one of the great free spectacles in Texas — 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats roost under the bridge from mid-March through October, emerging each evening at dusk in a swirling column that can take 45 minutes to fully clear. The best viewing is from the south bank of Lady Bird Lake, on the grass near the Four Seasons or kayak-level on a rented boat. Local restaurants set up bat-watching menus on their terraces. Peak season is late summer (August) when the juvenile bats join the adults, doubling the spectacle. Bat Conservation International has a viewing stand and staff on-site to explain the colony.
