The spiritual home of Austin cool — a converted 1930s motel on South Congress with courtyard gardens, a legendary pool bar, and a minimalist aesthetic that defined a certain kind of American boutique hotel. Book well in advance.
Why We Chose It
Hotel San José is the most famous boutique hotel in Austin — a 1936 motor court motel on South Congress Avenue that Liz Lambert converted in the late 1990s into a spare, beautiful property that helped launch the modern boutique hotel movement. Forty rooms arranged around a central courtyard garden with a pool, outdoor showers, and the Jo's Coffee bar (Austin's most Instagrammed storefront, famous for its 'I Love You So Much' wall mural). The rooms are small and minimalist — no TVs — but the vibe is irreplaceable. The on-site bar pours natural wines and local beers to a beautiful, tattooed crowd. Walk to everything on SoCo.
