The Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta opened in 1924 as Austin's first skyscraper and remains one of its most elegantly proportioned downtown buildings — a 12-story Beaux-Arts tower on Congress Avenue that was the address for visiting dignitaries, politicians, and performers for most of the 20th century. The hotel was meticulously restored by Royal Sonesta and now combines its historic character with contemporary amenities. The rooftop bar (Rooftop 360) has the most spectacular views in downtown Austin: the Capitol dome directly to the north, Lady Bird Lake to the south, and the city skyline on either side. The Congress Avenue address is ideal — the bat colony bridge is 4 blocks south, 6th Street entertainment is 2 blocks east, and the Drinkery and Driskill are nearby for bar-hopping.
