Why We Chose It
Turtle Inn is the companion property to Blancaneaux Lodge — Coppola's coastal complement to his mountain jungle retreat, located just outside Placencia Town on the Belize southern coast. The original Turtle Inn was swept completely to sea by Hurricane Iris in 2001 (one year after Coppola acquired it); he rebuilt it entirely from scratch, shipping architectural materials and textiles from Bali to create the property's distinctive Balinese-Caribbean aesthetic. The 25 accommodations include thatched-roof cottages, two-level bungalows, a family pavilion, and a modernist beach house, all with white sand beach access. The restaurant is the finest in Placencia by wide consensus. The property's position on the southern Belizean coast makes it the optimal base for the Gladden Spit whale shark aggregation (March through June) — the largest seasonal gathering of whale sharks in the Western Hemisphere, accessible by 90-minute boat trip. Turtle Inn was rebuilt with Coppola's own collection of Balinese antiques, art, and textiles; Eleanor Coppola (who died in 2023) was the primary designer.
