Why It’s Worth Your Time
Cape Town's beaches are extraordinary but context matters. Clifton's four numbered beaches (accessible only by steep stairs from Victoria Road) are sheltered from the south-easter wind and have the calmest water on the Atlantic side — 4th Beach is the most social; 1st and 2nd are quieter. Camps Bay beach is wide, beautiful, and faces west into spectacular sunsets but can be windy and is often busy with hawkers. Boulders Beach at Simon's Town (1 hour south) is a sheltered False Bay beach with the famous penguin colony — warmer water than the Atlantic side. The water is cold year-round on the Atlantic side (14–18°C); warmer on the False Bay coast. Best swimming: Boulders, or any beach on the False Bay coast.
