Why It’s Worth Your Time
Watching the sun drop into the Caribbean from the top of Cartagena's city walls is one of the great free experiences in Latin America. The best positions: the Baluarte de Santo Domingo (the raised bastion near Café del Mar in Centro, with 360° views), the wall walk between the Baluarte de San Ignacio and the Torre del Reloj (the clock tower gate), and the walls behind Getsemaní for a less-touristy view. Café del Mar on top of the walls charges for drinks but not for the view (and the sunset cocktail is a rite of passage). Arrive 45 minutes before sunset; the light changes dramatically in the last 20 minutes.
