Istrian Truffle Season & the Wine Road — White Truffles, Malvazija, and the Agrotourism Table

Fine Dining

Getaway Unpacked Edit

The white truffle season in Motovun Forest (October–December, and lesser white truffles in spring) is the most gastronomically significant seasonal event in Croatia. Combined with the Istrian Wine Road (Malvazija Istarska, Teran), it constitutes the finest food-and-wine itinerary in the Adriatic.

Why It Belongs on the List

Istria produces white truffles of a quality that rivals Piedmont — the Motovun Forest, in the oak-covered Mirna River valley, is the epicenter. The main white truffle season runs October–December, with a secondary spring season in April–May. Dining during truffle season in Istria: tartuf pasta in any agriturismo konoba from Motovun to Grožnjan, the truffle dishes at Restaurant Zigante in Livade (the commercial hub of the Istrian truffle trade), and the shaved white truffle on scrambled eggs that is the most Istrian thing a visitor can eat. The Istrian Wine Road connects the peninsula's best konobas and wineries — Malvazija Istarska (the defining white grape, producing wines from light and mineral to rich and barrel-aged) and Teran (the earthy red) are the indigenous varieties to seek.
