The essential sights within: the Crown Room housing the Honors of Scotland (the oldest surviving crown jewels in Britain) and the Stone of Destiny (the coronation stone of Scottish kings, returned from Westminster in 1996); St Margaret's Chapel (the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, c. 1130); the Great Hall; and the One O'Clock Gun (fired daily except Sundays at exactly 1pm — a tradition since 1861). The views from the esplanade in all four directions are extraordinary. Buy tickets online well in advance — queues can be 45–60 minutes without. Allow 2–3 hours for the full complex.
