Lake Como, Italy — Things to Do

Villa Balbianello

Culture

Getaway Unpacked Edit

Among the most theatrical villas on Lake Como — perched on a wooded headland near Lenno with loggias overhanging the water, formal gardens descending to a private dock, and a film history including Casino Royale and Star Wars. Only accessible by boat or 20-minute hike.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

Villa Balbianello at Lenno is Lake Como's most dramatic villa — an 18th-century property on a narrow wooded promontory, accessible only by boat or a 20-minute footpath. The loggia overlooking the lake — a double arcade of arches framing water and mountains — is the single most photographed architectural feature on Como. The interior is preserved as the explorer Guido Monzino left it (donated to FAI, the Italian National Trust). The villa appeared in Casino Royale and Star Wars: Episode II. Arrive by water taxi — arriving by water is significantly better than the footpath.
