Las Vegas's most historically and culturally compelling day — Fremont Street Experience (the original casino district under the world's largest LED canopy, free light shows, the SlotZilla zipline, and the casinos whose table minimums are $5–10 vs. the Strip's $25–50) combined with the Mob Museum (the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, the most unexpectedly excellent museum in Las Vegas, whose interactive exhibits on the FBI, organized crime, and the rise and fall of the mob's control of Las Vegas are both entertaining and notably educational) and the Neon Museum (the boneyard of restored Las Vegas neon signs, best on a night tour).
Why It’s Worth Your Time
The Fremont Street Experience (1995) roofed five pedestrian blocks with the Viva Vision LED canopy (1,500 feet long), transforming an open-air casino row into an entertainment district. Free nightly light shows (hourly from 6pm) are the best free entertainment after the Bellagio Fountains. Downtown casinos (Golden Nugget — whose Hand of Faith is the world's largest gold nugget at 61 pounds — the D, Binion's, the Plaza) maintain lower table minimums (–10 vs. –50 on the Strip). The Mob Museum is housed in the actual courthouse where the 1950 Kefauver Committee investigated organized crime in Nevada — using the original courtroom, FBI surveillance photographs, and artifacts including the St. Valentine's Day Massacre wall to tell the story from Prohibition through the present. The Underground (basement speakeasy and moonshine distillery, operated by the museum) is the most themed bar experience in Las Vegas.
