GR-221 Dry Stone Route — Multi-Day Tramuntana Trekking

Adventure

Getaway Unpacked Edit

The finest long-distance walking route in Spain — the GR-221 Ruta de Pedra en Sec (Dry Stone Route), a 183-kilometer signposted trail through the entire Serra de Tramuntana from Andratx in the south to Pollença in the north, structured in 9 stages following ancient paths connecting olive-terrace villages, mountain refuges, and cliff-face viewpoints that are inaccessible by road.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

The GR-221 was established by the Mallorcan government in 2009 to formalize the network of ancient tracks that connected the Tramuntana's farming communities — paths built with the dry-stone walling technique (pedra en sec, stone laid without mortar using a self-supporting arch principle) that characterizes all construction in this part of Mallorca. The 183km route (9 stages, 2–7 hours per stage) follows these paths through the landscape that the UNESCO World Heritage designation recognized: olive terraces unchanged since the Islamic period, snow-houses (pous de neu) where winter snow was packed for sale in Palma, charcoal kilns, and the constant presence of the Mediterranean 300–500 meters below the cliff edge. Mountain refuges (Cases de Neu, Tossals Verds, etc.) provide overnight accommodation along the route (advance booking essential in season). The Barranc de Biniaraix (a deeply enclosed gorge above Sóller, accessible as a half-day walk from the city) and the summit of Puig de Massanella (1,365m, the highest peak accessible to walkers) are the two highlights in the central section. Day-by-day sections can be walked independently; the full traverse takes 9–12 days.
