The Road to Hana (Highway 360) is one of the great scenic drives in the United States — but it requires full commitment. The 64-mile drive from Paia takes a minimum of 2.5 hours without stops, and 6–8 hours with stops (which is the way to do it). Key stops: the Garden of Eden arboretum, Puohokamoa Falls, the bamboo forest at Pipiwai Trail, Wai'anapanapa State Park (black sand beach — advance reservation required), and the Seven Sacred Pools at 'Ohe'o Gulch. The road is narrow with one-lane bridges. Many car rental agreements prohibit the drive beyond a certain point — check before renting. Consider staying at Travaasa Hana and doing it over two days.
