Mykonos, Greece — Things to Do

Ano Mera & Windmill Walk

Culture

Getaway Unpacked Edit

The two best escapes from the Psarou-and-beach-club circuit: Ano Mera (the only other real village on Mykonos, 7km inland, with the 16th-century Panagia Tourliani Monastery, authentic tavernas, and no tourists) and the 45-minute walk from Mykonos Town up to the Kato Mili windmills above Little Venice, continuing along the ridge to the Archaeological Museum. Early morning at the windmills before the crowds arrive is among the most beautiful moments on any Greek island.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

The two best escapes from the beach club circuit: Ano Mera is the quiet inland village with the Panagia Tourliani monastery and authentic tavernas. The windmill walk from Mykonos Town to Boni’s Mill offers the best panoramic views.

What Stands Out

  • Ano Mera: the real Mykonos — Monastery of Panagia Tourliani (16th century), local tavernas, €15 meals
  • Eat at Taverna Ano Mera: the best souvlaki on the island, frequented by locals
  • Windmill walk: 45 minutes from town center, best at dawn before crowds, the defining Mykonos image
  • Archaeological Museum: small but excellent, Cycladic artifacts, free with Delos site ticket
