New Zealand's nine designated Great Walks are the finest multi-day hiking routes in the country — from the 4-day Milford Track to the coastal Abel Tasman. All require advance booking through DOC.
Why It’s Worth Your Time
The Milford Track (4 days, most famous), Routeburn Track (3 days, most scenic views), and Abel Tasman Coast Track (3–5 days, coastal and accessible) are the most sought-after. All require booking huts or campsites through the Department of Conservation website (doc.govt.nz) months in advance for the October–April season. The Kepler Track near Te Anau and the Tongariro Northern Circuit are also exceptional. Summer (Dec–Feb) books out fastest — aim for shoulder season if flexibility allows.
