A 500-year-old Spanish colonial city on a small peninsula — blue-cobblestoned streets, pastel buildings, and one of the most intact colonial environments in the Americas. Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal — the largest Spanish fortifications ever built in the Americas — are the top-visited sites in Puerto Rico. The streets between are dense with restaurants, bars, boutiques, and galleries. By night, Old San Juan's bars lead the metro area. A short ride connects to Condado for beach access.
Condado is San Juan's most glamorous neighborhood — a beachfront strip 15 minutes from Old San Juan with luxury hotels on the oceanfront, excellent restaurants on Avenida Ashford, and a social energy that locals compare to Miami Beach. The Condado Vanderbilt (1919) and La Concha Renaissance anchor the hotel strip. Condado Beach itself is wide, sandy, and excellent for swimming. The Condado Lagoon on the landward side is calm and good for kayaking and paddleboarding.
