Hotel Fasano Punta del Este is the Brazilian luxury group's most celebrated international outpost — individual stand-alone villas in a striking brutalist-inflected design by Isay Weinfeld, set above the Maldonado River in La Barra. The villas have outdoor terraces and private space; the main restaurant is open three days a week and produces meals that guests rank among the best of their trips. The spa is excellent; there are four tennis courts, a pool, and a river beach in summer. The Fox who lives on the property and occasionally steals Birkenstocks has achieved legendary status. Book months ahead for January and February.
