Getaway Unpacked Edit

Volcanic hot spring pools in the desert outside San Miguel — La Gruta has a famous underground grotto pool; Escondido Place is a beautiful outdoor complex. 15–20 minutes from Centro; essential for a half-day trip.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

San Miguel sits in volcanic highlands and the natural hot springs nearby are extraordinary. La Gruta (15 minutes from Centro) features a series of outdoor pools culminating in a spectacular underground grotto — a cave with thermal water dripping from the ceiling, accessible via a short underwater passage. Escondido Place (20 minutes) has a beautiful series of outdoor thermal pools in a cactus landscape, with a temazcal (traditional steam lodge) ceremony available. Both operate on weekends at capacity; arrive early or book a temazcal ahead. A half-day trip from any accommodation in town.
