Why It’s Worth Your Time
Schönbrunn was the primary summer residence of the Habsburg emperors from the 18th century onward — Maria Theresa, Mozart, Napoleon, and Emperor Franz Joseph all spent significant time here. The palace tour covers the imperial apartments with their original furnishings; the Gloriette hilltop monument has the finest view in Vienna; and the formal gardens (free to enter) are the city's best outdoor space. The Imperial Tour (22 rooms) and Grand Tour (40 rooms) are both excellent. Allow half a day.
