The island most visitors picture when they think of Belize — a 25-mile barrier island with the Belize Barrier Reef (the world's second-longest) running parallel just offshore, offering some of the finest snorkelling access in the Caribbean. San Pedro Town is the only real settlement: colorful wooden buildings, sandy streets, golf carts as transport, and the country's best restaurant concentration. Caye Caulker, Shark Ray Alley, and Hol Chan Marine Reserve are all accessed by boat. The north end (5 miles out, boat access only) hosts the finest resorts, including Matachica and Victoria House. The Blue Hole is a three-hour boat journey from San Pedro.
'Go Slow' is the motto and the island lives it — no cars (golf carts and bicycles only), a single sandy main street, a genuine backpacker-to-boutique culture, and some of Belize's most accessible reef snorkelling from the Split (a natural channel created by a 1961 hurricane). The barrier reef is even closer to shore than at Ambergris Caye. Nurse sharks, stingrays, manatees, and sea turtles are regular sightings. Smaller and more intimate than San Pedro, with lower prices, more family-run restaurants, and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that earns a 'go slow' slogan. 45 minutes from Belize City by water taxi.

A 16-mile sand spit on Belize's southern coast — the country's closest thing to a classic Caribbean beach town: wide white sand, a sandy main street (described by Guinness as the world's narrowest), and direct access to Silk Cayes, South Water Caye Marine Reserve, and the whale shark aggregation at Gladden Spit (March–June, the largest in the Western Hemisphere). Mainland destinations (San Ignacio, Hopkins, Placencia) require a car or local transport for anything beyond the immediate town center.
On the cayes (Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker): no — golf carts and feet. On the mainland: yes, or you rely on expensive taxis. Car hire is available in Belize City and San Ignacio. A 4WD is recommended for Cayo District roads, particularly in the rainy season. Domestic flights between BZE, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia are the most practical alternative to long drives.
Tourist destinations (Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Placencia, San Ignacio) are generally safe with normal precautions. Belize City is not a tourist destination and should be transited rather than explored on foot. The cayes and most resort areas have very low crime rates.
