🕐Time Zone
Quintana Roo uses Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5) year-round and does not observe daylight saving time.
✈️Getting There
Cozumel has an international airport and a passenger-ferry connection with Playa del Carmen. Direct air routes and ferry schedules vary. If arriving through Cancún, allow time for the separate ground transfer and weather-dependent ferry crossing.
📌How Many Days
Three or four nights for one marine day, San Miguel, and an island outing; five to seven nights for a dive-focused trip with weather flexibility.
🛂Visa
Mexico entry requirements depend on nationality, route, and length of stay. Check official immigration guidance and the current status and official payment channel of any Quintana Roo visitor charge before paying.
💵Currency
Mexican peso (MXN). Tourist businesses may quote US dollars, but exchange rates and card conversion practices vary. Confirm the currency before accepting a price or card conversion.
💬Language
Spanish is official; English is common in many hotels, dive shops, and visitor-facing restaurants.
🚗Getting Around
San Miguel is walkable. Taxis, dive-shop transfers, rental cars, bicycles, scooters, and golf carts serve different trips. Confirm taxi pricing and rental insurance; prioritize enclosed vehicles over scooters for longer or unfamiliar roads.
☀️Best Time
Winter and spring are popular for drier conditions, but wind and sea closures still occur. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November. Diving, visibility, and ferry operations depend on current weather rather than calendar promises.
🚢Cruise traffic changes by day and by pier. Use a current ship schedule to anticipate taxi, downtown, and beach-club demand, but do not assume the whole island is overwhelmed whenever a ship is present.
🧴Marine parks and individual operators may restrict sunscreen or ask guests to avoid it before entering the water. Follow the current operator and park rules, use protective clothing and shade, and never market a product as “reef safe” without recognizing that no sunscreen is harmless to a reef.
🤿Choose a dive or training operator based on current credentials, equipment, oxygen and emergency planning, group size, instructor attention, and honest site selection. Clear water does not remove the risks of currents, boats, depth, or inadequate training.
🛵Scooters and golf carts are not automatically the safest or most practical way to circle Cozumel. Traffic, rain, uneven shoulders, fatigue, and limited crash protection matter. Compare a car, taxi, or guided driver before renting, and never drive after drinking.
🌊The east coast is exposed and can have dangerous surf and currents. Swim only where current local guidance supports it; remote scenery, a beach bar, or visible swimmers do not guarantee safe conditions.
