The island's only real town — a horseshoe harbor ringed by megayachts, luxury boutiques (Hermès, Cartier, Louis Vuitton with exclusive island pieces), excellent restaurants, and bars that don't get going until after midnight. The name is Swedish: St. Barths was a Swedish colony from 1784 to 1878, explaining the harbor layout and fort architecture. Shell Beach — a cove covered in crushed shells rather than sand — is a 5-minute walk. The Gustavia sunset from Fort Oscar is among the best viewpoints.
The most accessible beach on the island — a crescent of calm, reef-protected turquoise water just east of the airport, with Eden Rock hotel on its dramatic promontory and Nikki Beach's legendary Sunday party on the western section. The bay splits at the rock: the west end has beach clubs, restaurants, and windsurfing; the east end is calmer and more residential. The flight approach over the hillside onto the short airstrip — runway begins at the hilltop, ends at the beach — is one of aviation's most thrilling arrivals.
Flamands on the northwest coast has the widest and longest beach on St. Barths — a 600-meter sweep of fine white sand and calm water backed by the Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France, the island's most glamorous resort. The northwest orientation means Flamands gets consistent gentle waves, making it a good beach for swimming and bodyboarding. Fewer people, more open sky, and a more peaceful rhythm than St. Jean or Gustavia. The drive to Flamands along the coast road passes some of the most beautiful cliff and bay scenery on the island.
Grand Saline on the southeastern coast is one of St. Barths' most beautiful beaches — a wide arc of fine white sand with no bars, no vendors, and no services. Naturism is informal and respected here; it's not mandatory but the beach has a long tradition of topless and nude sunbathing. Bring everything you need (food, water, shade). The approach road is extremely steep. Le Tamarin restaurant is nearby in the jungle — a deeply romantically beautiful restaurant settings on the island. Anse de Grande Saline adjoins Petit Saline and Gouverneur (another spectacular south coast beach) within a short drive.
Lorient is the oldest settlement on St. Barths — a small village with the island's main Catholic church, a historic cemetery, and Marigot Bay is a calm anchorage popular with sailors. The eastern part of the island between Lorient and the Grand Cul de Sac lagoon (excellent for kiteboarding and paddleboarding — the most sheltered water on the island) is the most local and least touristic part of St. Barths. The narrow winding roads through this section are the most dramatic on the island.

St. Barths has no direct international flights — access is via St. Maarten/Sint Maarten (SXM): 15-minute flight on Winair, St. Barth Commuter, or Tradewind Aviation into Gustaf III Airport (SBH), one of the world's most technically demanding runway approaches. Alternatively, high-speed ferry from St. Maarten (45 minutes). SXM receives direct service from New York (~4h), Miami (~3h), and major US/European cities.

Getting Around
