Bellagio sits at the tip of the Y-shaped lake where the two southern branches divide — the most enviably positioned town on Como, with views in three directions and the best concentration of restaurants, hotels, and boat connections. The centro storico climbs steeply from the two waterfront promenades through narrow stepped lanes called contrade, lined with geranium-hung balconies and silk boutiques. Two ferry docks serve Bellagio: the Traghetto (car ferry to Menaggio and Varenna) and the main landing for other routes — these are 5 minutes apart on foot, which matters when you're catching a boat. Book everything months ahead for June–August.
Varenna on the eastern shore is the town that serious Lake Como visitors often prefer to Bellagio — smaller (about 800 residents), quieter after 6pm when day-trippers leave, and reached directly by train from Milan (1 hour). The Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Walk of Lovers) is a narrow lakeside path on stilts above the water — one of the most romantic short walks in Italy. Villa Monastero's terraced gardens descend directly to the lake. Fewer restaurants than Bellagio but better value. Book accommodation very early — there are only a handful of hotels and they fill completely for summer.
The western shore between Menaggio and Lenno contains the grandest villa architecture on the lake — Villa Carlotta (with extraordinary botanical gardens open to the public), Villa Balbianello (used in Casino Royale and Star Wars), and the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, one of the premier hotels on Como. The western shore gets the best afternoon sun and sunset views across to Bellagio. This stretch — the Tremezzina — is the most scenically striking section of the lake.
Menaggio on the western shore is the least glamorous of the main towns but the most comfortable for an extended stay — a proper Italian town with a flat lakeside piazza (Piazza Garibaldi), good supermarkets, a lido beach, and hiking trails rising directly from town into the mountains. Summer programming often includes classical music concerts on Piazza Garibaldi — check current schedules. Lower prices than Bellagio across hotels and restaurants. The car ferry to Varenna and Bellagio runs from Menaggio, making it the best base if you're driving.
Como is the largest city on the lake and the main arrival point from Milan (1 hour by train) — a proper Italian city with a magnificent Gothic-Renaissance Duomo, a silk museum documenting Como's centuries as the silk capital of Europe, and ferry connections up the lake. Most visitors pass through without stopping, which is a mistake — the Duomo alone is worth an hour. Cernobbio, 5km north of Como, is where Villa d'Este sits — a 16th-century cardinal's palace that became one of the most celebrated hotels in the world.

Fly into Milan Malpensa (MXP) — travel time depends heavily on which town you are staying in; allow approximately 1–2 hours from the airport depending on mode and destination. Milan Linate (LIN) is closer to the city but has fewer international routes. Train from Milan Centrale to Como San Giovanni: approximately 35 minutes. Bergamo (BGY) is farther and usually less convenient for Lake Como than Malpensa or Linate.

For Varenna directly, take the train from Milan to Varenna-Esino station (about 1 hour on the Lecco line). Car from Milan is 45–60 minutes without traffic; longer on summer weekends.
