Negril divides into two useful bases: Seven Mile Beach for easy sand access, swimming, and larger resorts; and the West End for cliffs, smaller hotels, sunset bars, and a more dramatic setting. Decide whether a traditional beach or cliff access matters more before choosing a hotel.
Montego Bay is the easiest arrival base for many visitors, with the Hip Strip, Doctor’s Cave Beach, Rose Hall resorts, golf, and short airport transfers. It works especially well for a quick resort trip, though the wider city and resort corridor are distinct areas and should not be treated as uniformly walkable.
Ocho Rios is a busy north-coast base for Dunn’s River Falls, Blue Hole, gardens, rafting, and cruise traffic. Its convenience comes with crowds, particularly on ship days. Oracabessa and Goldeneye lie east of town and should not be described as central Ocho Rios.
Port Antonio and Portland offer a greener, quieter, less resort-dense version of Jamaica, with the Rio Grande, coves, waterfalls, and boutique stays. The tradeoff is distance: transfers are long, roads can be slow, and Goldeneye is in Oracabessa rather than Port Antonio.
The Blue Mountains rise above Kingston and reward travelers with coffee estates, cooler temperatures, hikes, and small retreats. They pair naturally with Kingston but require more planning from the north- and west-coast resort zones.
Treasure Beach and the South Coast trade large resorts for small communities, guesthouses, fishing beaches, farms, and slower travel. Jakes is the best-known base; Appleton Estate, Black River, and Little Ochie require significant driving and should be grouped thoughtfully rather than treated as north-coast side trips.
